Imagine your worst nightmare.....then times that by an unimaginable amount - well that's probably not even close to the helplessness & pain a family feels when someone within their family becomes ill. So when my big sister Donna became ill you can only imagine the heartache we all faced along side her from then on out. The person I look up to, my best friend & a daughter, wife, sister, auntie, sister in law, friend & most importantly mummy to 2 amazing children Megan 8 & Aaron 5. Not just any illness.... CANCER!! The disease that everyone knows someone who is fighting, overcome or sadly lost their battle to, but also the one that people think "that will never happen to me or anyone around me". Unfortunately it can happen in the blink of an eye, CANCER knows no boundaries!! After being mis-diagnosed for 2 years as sciatica my sister was finally given the dreaded diagnosis which was SARCOMA CANCER, not only CANCER but INCURABLE CANCER, something she has been told she will NEVER get rid of! Being the amazingly brave, strong, positive person she is her outlook was "as long as I can continue to live with it". The battle begun with intensive chemotherapy which now three years later she has received around 16 doses of chemo which had to be authorised by NHS officials due to the expense & rarity of the treatment required. Since the beginning she has also had around 21 radio therapy sessions but throughout the treatment the results tended to remain the same & it would seem the majority of the time getting scan results showing the cancer spreading or increasing. Donna has been through all this & never once & I mean NOT ONCE complained of being ill or the effects of the treatments, ALL whilst being the most amazing mum to her kids, running a house, being a wife & also just getting on with every day life with the outlook of "what's crying in a corner going to do - just need to get on with it". Well it's come to a point where alternative therapies are looking like a life saving option, one where if effective donna can live her life to the fullest & watch her children grow & be by their side every step of the way - probably a mothers second worst nightmare to their child being ill, is as a mum not being there to protect her children. Well I will cut to the chase, alternative therapies are expensive, so expensive that in actual fact the average working man doesn't make enough in a full months wage to cover a month of the treatment!! As much as it is not something any of us wanted to do particularly Donna & Grant - there is no way they or we as a family could possibly fund the treatment. It's not a one off thing if it proves successful it will be something she has to try & fund for the rest of her life!! I constantly have people asking how they can help Donna & her family, often people sending cards, flowers & gifts which are much appreciated.
