23 year old-Khalil Rashawn Hamlin tragically passed away on, Thursday, July 28th 2022. He and his girlfriend, 23 year old-Ashani were involved in a head-on collision. They were traveling in a sedan when a truck that was being pursued by police as well as an aviation unit struck them.
At around 6:59 p.m. EST on July 28th, officers were called to the scene of a reported robbery. According to Lt. John Payne Jr. of the Chesterfield Police Department, the circumstances surrounding the robbery is unknown, but the victim of the robbery was pistol-whipped with a firearm.
Police said the suspect then drove away from the scene in a stolen red Dodge Ram truck. Officers were deployed in the air and on the ground in pursuit of the suspect, who refused to stop the vehicle, according to Lt. Payne.
While driving, the suspect crossed a double yellow line in an attempt to get away from officers and struck Khalil & Ashanti’s vehicle which was traveling in the opposite direction.
The suspect then ran away from the scene of the crash, but was arrested shortly afterwards by police.
Khalil was pronounced dead at the crash scene, while his girlfriend, Ashanti, was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
