We are devastated to share the sudden and tragic loss of our beloved Wilson Mendes, who passed away unexpectedly due to a heart attack on May 30th, 2023. In this time of immense grief, we look to support Wilson's young family during this incredibly challenging period.
Wilson lived a life of integrity as a dedicated and loving husband, father, son, friend, colleague, teacher, learner, community member and tender caretaker of the earth. A passionate man who used his gifts and dedicated his entire life to the betterment of humanity, cultivating community, and all with an infectious zest for life and a playful spirit that we will cherish in memory.
Wilson was committed to learning and proudly sharing his Indigenous Terena and Guarani-Kaiowá/Mozambican cultural teachings while working towards social and environmental justice. His doctorate took place on the unceded traditional and ancestral Territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) People, at xwc̓ic̓əsəm Garden at UBC Farm. Wilson’s contributions left a significant impact on the world, and he will always be remembered for his uncompromising dedication to creating a better future for Indigenous people, especially the youth. He left an incredible legacy of inspiration, hope, and motivation for those battling discrimination, inequality, and social injustice. We will deeply miss one of the brightest lights.
As Wilson journeys in his next spiritual quest, his family remains earthside navigating this heartbreaking new reality. He is survived by his mother Terezinha Pereira Mendes, wife Fiona, and three sons João Victor Mendes, Attila Kovacs-Mendes (13), and Jade Mendes (21 months), and extended family in Brazil.
In this time of deep sorrow and uncertainty, we humbly ask for your generous contributions to support Wilson's family. Your donations will provide much-needed assistance as they navigate the challenging road ahead and will be received directly by his wife Fiona. The funds collected will be utilized for various critical purposes in helping Wilson's family in their next steps, including:
- Wilson's wishes were to have his ashes returned to the earth in his hometown, Aquidauana, Brazil surrounded by his immediate family. Funds are needed to cover flights and travel costs.
- Fees associated with legal and miscellaneous matters.
- Expenses, bills, and other unexpected financial stressors for his wife and his children left behind.
Please join us in honouring Wilson's memory and legacy by spreading the word. Share it widely with individuals and communities who have been inspired by Wilson's remarkable journey and his unwavering commitment to social justice. Together, we can ensure that his spirit lives on and that his family receives the support they need during this profoundly challenging time. Your generosity and compassion will make a lasting impact on their lives.
Fiona, Wilson's wife has expressed her immense gratitude for the outpouring of love, kindness, and community support being held for their family in this devastating transition.
