Donkeys Sanctuary has to move! Help us build up a new home!

My name is Steffi, and I’ve been working with donkeys for around 7 years. A few months ago, I took on the responsibility of caring for 9 donkeys and their shelter. Now, I face a significant challenge: I need to build a new home for them.

After 20 years on a farm in the southwest Algarve (Aljezur), the landowner has decided to part ways with our donkey project, and we must relocate. We have only a few days left until the beginning of spring, and our journey to a new home begins. We have secured a place where we can stay during this summer, but we urgently need to build a permanent home for the donkeys.

The last few years have been quite difficult for us. Due to the impact of COVID and several years of insufficient rainfall, it has become harder to sustain the donkeys. Our herd was originally 15, but we had to split it due to these challenges. Currently, I care for 9 donkeys, while the remaining 6 are being cared for by the previous owner. We hope in our hearts that one day we can reunite the herd.

A generous friend has offered us 12 hectares of land, ideal for our donkeys, but the land has no existing infrastructure. We need to build shelters for the donkeys, a place where visitors can feel comfortable and welcome, and a space for our pottery workshops that take place in the presence of these peaceful animals.

Our donkey business sustains us and provides for the animals, so it’s crucial to have a suitable space to continue offering donkey tours and caring for the donkeys.
