Donny Powell Fundraiser
Donation protected
We are Andi and Ivan Sanders, friends of Donny Powell and MaryBeth Warner.
Early this spring Donny began experiencing painful sores in his mouth that would not respond to medication. He continued to get worse and in June was finally diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and floor of his mouth. He was immediately referred to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport and put on priority status for surgery, which he will undergo on July 12, 2019. His surgery is quite complex and will involve removal of his teeth, at least part of his tongue, other affected tissue and lymph nodes down into his neck.
Donny will remain in the hospital for at least 12 days while he undergoes reconstructive surgery and physical therapy. He will undergo many weeks of rehabilitation and extensive physical therapy after he returns home. Donny will come home with a tracheotomy and a feeding tube and will need a specialized diet until he is completely healed. Healing will take an estimated 12 to 14 weeks. MaryBeth will need to take off work to care for him and take him to appointments.
Donny has no medical insurance, cannot work, and has no way of paying for living expenses and medical costs. LSU Hospital is over 100 miles from Donny and MaryBeth's home, and she is commuting back and forth almost daily. MaryBeth has to take off work to be at the hospital with Donny and to have the critical communications with his doctors that are needed to manage his condition. They do not have money for a hotel and there is no low cost housing available for patient families.
Your donation is immediately needed to help MaryBeth with transportation expenses to and from LSU and pay for a motel room when necessary (one is close to the hospital and costs about $80 per night with tax). Your donation is also urgently needed to help Donny and MaryBeth with their basic living needs, medications and other supplies that will be needed when he gets home.
How else can you help? Holly Park Marina is holding a bass tournament and fundraising event on July 27, 2019 as part of their 50th anniversary celebration. Donations of gift certificates, guide trips and other products would be welcomed. Please contact Holly Park to make arrangements.
Please go to our Facebook pages @AndiIvanSanders and @TalonFishingUnlimited for more ways to help and for updates on Donny's condition and how your donations have made a difference.
As we write this on July 11, MaryBeth had to rush Donny (as if you could drive 110 miles through Louisiana in a rush) to the LSU ER for treatment. His surgery is scheduled for tomorrow and we are praying he is admitted tonight.
God Bless you for your kindness.
