Donta Mckay Recovery

On Sunday, April 2, 2023, Donta Mckay was hit by a drunk driver in a head-on collision near La Plata, MD. Due to the severity of his injuries, Donta was immediately transported by Maryland State Police helicopter to MedStar Washington Hospital Center where his injuries were treated by their trauma team. Donta sustained extensive injuries that have required a more than two-week stay in the ICU. While he is now stable, Donta remains hospitalized and will have a lengthy recovery period including a transition to a rehabilitation facility before returning home with his family.

Donta is a long-standing employee of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. He started in 2007 as a night shift front-line supply tech and worked tirelessly for 12 years from 11 pm to 7 am re-stocking the inpatient nursing floors with supplies. During that time he developed relationships with many nurse managers and floor nurses, who appreciated his work ethic, his steady, calm demeanor, and his knowledge of their supplies. He was especially appreciated by the Clinical Administration staff, who relied on his quick action to resolve many emergency supply and equipment needs. In 2019, he was promoted to Supervisor, where he led a team of 5 Supply Techs during the worst days of the Covid pandemic. His success during the pandemic led to his promotion to Manager in 2021, and his exemplary leadership is valued and appreciated by the entire nursing staff, as well as the Physician staff, and hospital Executive leadership. Unfortunately, Donta's PTO and short-term disability will not be enough to cover his salary during his prolonged recovery period.

Donta is an avid bowler and a beloved member of the following local bowling leagues: Black Ski Bowling at the AMF Capital Plaza Lanes in Hyattsville, MD and Fun Inc. at the AMF Marlow Heights Lanes in Marlow Heights, MD. Donta eagerly looks forward to returning to bowling and his teammates upon his recovery.

This devastating accident has not only impacted Donta, but has also created a significant burden for his wife, Virgie, and their children - Destyni (15) and Carter (9).
