On July 19th, 2022, my sister Ashley Waller was admitted to Lewis Gale Medical Center for treatment of an autoimmune disease known as Bullous pemphigoid. To rewind a few weeks, she had previously visited a dermatologist for testing and was awaiting results. 3 weeks had passed, and no results were released until July 19th. She was diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid, which is a rare autoimmune disorder that can be fatal without proper and immediate treatment. This treatment was not available with the delay in relaying the results, which led her condition to worsen to a nearly unbearable point. When Ashley was admitted into Lewis Gale, her body was septic and she was in excruciating pain. Bullous pemphigoid produces large, fluid-filled blisters all over the body and may occur in the mouth, as well. Ashley had both body and mouth wounds, making it painful to move or eat. This is a very rare condition, and there are fewer than 20,000 cases a year.
As Ashley spent weeks at Lewis Gale, she was very displeased with her treatment and care. With no improvement and her pain not managed, they released her on the August 5th to her family. She was in excruciating pain and covered in open, infected wounds. When she arrived in Halifax we knew we had to do something. We took her to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital with the help of Halifax County EMS. Sentara treated her to the best of their ability and kept her comfortable as she spent the night there, and the next morning they transferred her to a burn center at VCU for wound care. To the present day my sister Ashley remains in VCU for her medical condition, and we are unsure of how long she will be in their care. Her husband Justin has been by her side the whole time, but with him being their sole income, this has left them with an extremely heavy burden of medical bills that will continue to increase as she is admitted and after release for follow-up treatment and medications.
Today, I am trying to raise money to help my sister pay some of her medical bills. We are unsure of how long her treatments will be necessary, but they have already been burdened with an extensive amount of bills in the few weeks that she has been receiving care.
