Donut Needs Our Help!

Donut needs our help…..physically, spiritually, emotionally but mostly financially!!!

Two months ago, myself and two others were trying to trap Donut, her two siblings and her mom. They were living under a shed located on a sports field in South Philadelphia. Due to their location and multiple logistical factors they were not easy to trap, regardless of all our different attempts and countless people helping. Unfortunately, after a month of trying the momma seemed to move the babies and other kittens came up that needed help urgently. We were no longer able to focus on the shed kittens, as we all had to help others. This is the reality of animal rescue, you can’t always help them all, but you always think about those still out there.

On Monday, May 2nd I received an early morning text that one of the kittens was caught!! Donut was found at 1am, dragging herself across the street as she was unable to use her back legs. She was very lucky a resident on the block that cares for the animals was outside and saw her. Donut was likely hit by a car and had multiple injuries to her hind legs. I brought her to Blue Pearl Pet Hospital to be seen while I worked out the best plan for her. They took images and it was discovered she had one badly broken hind leg, fractures throughout both hind legs, and they had concerns there was an injury to her pelvis bone. The estimated cost to save her was $10-15k. I had to decide that day to either pay this bill or find rescue placement to save her life, or humanely euthanize her.

I planned to have her euthanized but reached out to Lauren Cohn with Fishtails Animal Rescue for a second opinion. It was a difficult decision to make, and I felt guilty that Donut was injured because I couldn’t catch her two months ago. Lauren called the ER immediately to discuss surgical options for Donut and then called and told me she was taking under the rescue and saving Donut’s life! Having been found near Federal Donut’s, Blue Pearl gave her the name Donut which is perfect! Donut had her first surgery on May 3rd and is scheduled for her second surgery one week after this. She will be going home with one of the ER doctors as her foster while she recovers. She’s very scared, having lived outside her entire life and going through this very painful and traumatic experience, but everyone is confident she will recover fully and blossom into a wonderful cat.

I would like to raise half of her bill to assist with this unexpected cost Fishtails Animal Rescue has taken on. Donut is the luckiest girl ever! She wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for Lauren. Learn more about Fishtails Animal Rescue at https://farsaves.com/

Let Donut be your inspiration to help cats outside. It isn’t her fault she was born outside, and it’s not fair this happened to her. Find options for TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) programs in your local community. Help control the number of innocent animals being born outside and the risks they are exposed to with this life. Volunteer with local rescues and shelters to help care for the animals at the facility or bring a pet home to foster and help them find their forever home!
