Honouring Dora: Bringing Her Back Home

Hello everyone,

My name is Emmanuel, and I'm reaching out with a heavy heart to share the story of my incredible mother. I am starting this GoFundMe to honour her memory and fulfil her final wish of being laid to rest in her beloved homeland of Ghana.

A Story of Love and Sacrifice

Dora and my father left their two daughters in Ghana to seek a better life in the UK. Within two years, Dora fell pregnant and gave birth to me. Sadly, when I was around 3 to 4 years old, my father was deported back to Ghana, leaving Dora alone to raise me without any support or family nearby.

Struggles and Separation

The immense pressure of raising me alone led Dora into a deep depression and psychotic episodes. This difficult situation culminated in a public altercation that resulted in me being placed in foster care at the tender age of 4. Despite these challenges, I was grateful to maintain a supervised relationship with my mother throughout my childhood.

When I was 5, my father passed away in Ghana, a fact I only learned when I turned 12. Even with the challenges, I cherished the 19 years I spent with my mother while in foster care. She was my rock, my inspiration, and the source of my strength.

Bringing Dora Back Home

In her memory and to honour her journey, I have decided to take her ashes to Ghana next month. It is my wish to bury her amongst her loved ones, where she can rest in peace in the comfort of her homeland.

Saying Goodbye

On June 8th, 2023, our world was shattered when a neighbour discovered my mother’s lifeless body. The suddenness of her passing has been incredibly hard to process, especially considering the hardships she endured throughout her life.
