Bi lateral Amputee stuck in her burning car
Donation protected
Hi My name is Tracy Holmes, and I'm raising funds to give my Dear Friend Tricia Semmens
, with no legs or fingers back her independence after her special needs car caught on fire.
On the 29th January 2023, Trish and her son were involved in a terrifying incident that has taken away her freedom and independence.
Nearly 22 years ago Trish became a double amputee (both legs and all fingers) after suffering from breast cancer and subsequent catastrophic medical complications. This left Trish unable to walk and has relied on the use of a wheelchair ever since.
Trish eventually purchased a car that was later fitted out with major modifications that would enable her to get into the car and drive independently from her wheelchair and the use of hand controls. This allowed her to have as close to her previous level of independence as before she became unwell all those years ago. It meant she could take herself to her medical appointments and venture out into society without relying on someone needing to transport her or have to try and lift her heavy motorized wheelchair into a car.
Back to the 29th of Jan – Trish and her Son were 10 minutes into a trip home after a weekend visiting friends, when suddenly her specialised vehicle unexpectedly began to fail – first the power steering, then the brakes and finally smoke and flames began to creep up over the bonnet within minutes.
Her son with quick thinking was able to maneuver the car into the embankment to stop the car from rolling and attempted to open the motorized ramp to get Trish out of the car – her wheelchair strapped into multiple lock points. However the electrics failed and it needed to be forced open with the help of passing people. But the ramp was landing in a ditch that was inaccessible by Trish and her wheelchair.
Her son was able to get her out using a manual ramp on the other side of the car and quickly removed her medications and disability equipment and in seconds the car was completely engulfed in flames.
Whilst both Trish and Jack are both physically unharmed, it has been incredibly traumatizing for them both. Particularly for Trish who has now lost her independence and means of transport. Trish can no longer get herself to medical appointments, do her grocery shopping or just go for a drive. She can’t borrow someone’s car, as her disabilities limit her physical function.
Whilst insurance will assist – it is only a small portion and will not cover the cost of a suitable type of vehicle that will accommodate the specialised modifications required for Trish to regain her independence.
We are hoping the community can rally together to support Trish, her family and help her get back on the road..Please note that if you do kindly donate, go fund me have the page set up with an automatic tip of 17% which you have to change. If you're unable to donate, could you please share the link, if you're comfortable in doing so.Cheers TIA
