Doug Rankin - Become a raft

On February 15, lightning struck the Rankin family when Doug was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor that doctors say is incurable and inoperable (though it may be treatable to some extent). Now, this wonderful man – who his family describes as “the strongest, healthiest, most reliably non-stop, fix-everything, show-up-for-everybody guy” – struggles to speak and is already in need of a wheelchair and 24/7 care. While his treatment costs are covered, insurance covers less than 50% of the personal care he needs to keep him safe, and while dear friends are showing up to cover some of the gaps, more professional help is needed right away. The expense of this help is a financial impossibility for the Rankins, as it would be for most of us, and other not-covered expenses are expected along the way. A “raft” is needed to help ease both the financial and the physical suffering. Together, we can be that raft.

Additionally, since most of Doug’s kids live far away, our help can make it possible for them to be with him as often as they are able without financial hindrance. Being far from a beloved parent at a time like this is beyond painful. What’s more, the comfort of family is incalculable. Let’s help them fly.

Doug’s wife, Lonnie, has said that – inevitably -- there are times when she sinks, but the love of friends and family keeps her, and all of them, afloat. Mazu Dayoi’s “raft” quote is one of her favorites. Now we are the raft, as she and Doug have been for many of us.
