Doug Smith Medical Fundraiser
Donation protected
This fundraiser is created on behalf of our beloved friend Doug who is in dire need of help. He has come on hard times due to several medical situations that have severely impacted his ability to provide for his own well being.
In June 2020, Doug was brought to the hospital with extreme pain brought on by a bladderstone and volvulous, the latter being the end stage of a rare, undiagnosed birth defect called intestinal malformation. This condition eventually twisted the colon into a deadly knot requiring catastrophic bowel surgery. After several hospital stays, surgery and complications which almost killed him, he was finally allowed to go home. The surgical procedure left him with a colostomy bag which was intended to be temporary until his insides healed enough to be re-connected. The corrective surgery must be done by early July 2021 or it will be considered too risky, leaving him stuck with the bag, of which he endures various complications, for life.
To make matters worse, he also suffers from worsening cataracts in both eyes and a rare optic nerve abnormality, leaving him almost blind.
Doug is currently unemployed and relied on a Multiplan insurance company, but it was a highly deceptive service that didn't cover anything, not even the surgery that saved his life. Without a job he does not qualify for the Affordable Care Act and can't afford any other form of insurance. His surgical team is unwilling to perform the final procedure to close him up until he can pay off the first surgery. He has been seeking state and federal aid to help with his medical and living needs, but it can take years to qualify and time is running out. He is in desperate need of a job, but between his medical conditions and the shortage of jobs due to Covid-19, it's been an uphill battle.
Doug is a kind and gentle soul who has been a great friend, loving father and son. He was a print business operator and photographer, then spent many years as a full time caregiver for his own father who died in 2016 at the age of 91. Now Doug needs our help. Our goal is to raise enough money to cover Doug's existing medical bills, to fix his cataracts and cover the corrective bowel surgery. It's a lot, but if everyone can pitch in, together we might be able to lift him up like angels and carry him to safety.
