On Sunday, 9/6/2020, Doug Welch had a freak accident at the beach where he dove into unexpected shallow water, banged his head and injured his neck. He underwent a couple of surgical procedures and was in the ICU for three days. Initially, Doug could move his arms but was unable to feel anything from his waist down.
He spent 30 days at Helen Hayes Rehab Hospital; they were wonderful, attentive and got him started on an aggressive rehab program. He was transferred to the VA Clinic in the Bronx on Oct 14th, where he will continue his treatment plan. The downside is they do not allow visitors.
Doug is a great husband, father, grandfather, son/son-in-law, brother, uncle, friend, aka person! He is a very fun-loving, active, giving, hard-working, and most of all, faith-filled man! And we all thank God he is alive!
Doug has a long road of rehab and recovery ahead! It's going to take all of his strength (mental, physical, emotional), faith and God’s grace, to recover. It will also be a long journey for his wife, Kathy, and their daughters. They are all positive and he is determined to be the best he can be! He is quoted as saying "When I am at my weakest, the Lord is at His strongest". Doug is motivated, but there are/will be good days and bad days. With the continued positive support from his family, friends and God's grace, we know Doug/family will get through this! This event has been/will continue to be life-changing!
There will be needs they know of, as well don’t know of, e.g. mobility equipment, home/vehicle modifications, therapy expenses, etc.
The outpouring of support has been humbling and so very much appreciated. Many have asked what can they do.
Since most of us are not able to be there in person or quite sure how we can continue to offer support, we started this Go Fund Me page for Doug and his family. If you would like to contribute, any amount will be greatly appreciated!
Most importantly, please keep Doug/Kathy/family in your prayers! For continued strength, positivity, improvement, etc.!
