Doug's Cancer Battle

March 15, 2019

Doug Crews began a battle for his life on Monday, October 22, 2018 after an early morning ER visit revealed a large brain tumor. Doug’s symptoms from the previous weekend had escalated to the point that he had little energy, an uncontrollable vibrating right leg, difficulty with short-term memory and was struggling to complete a sentence.  He and his wife, CC, were unaware and had no plan in place to treat this disease, but God did. The Lord provided a plan for Doug immediately through their church family at Capitol Hill Baptist Church soon after their arrival at the ICU in Norman, OK.  God’s plan included using a church member who is a doctor at OU Medical to provide a transfer to the OU Neuro-ICU. He quickly connected them with the outstanding surgeon Dr. Glenn at OU Medical who would do a successful resection of the whole tumor on that Wednesday. He was also able to clear the margin around the tumor as Doug provided feedback semi-awake on the operating table. This successful surgery resulted in most of Doug’s inabilities mentioned above being restored. Glioblastoma Stage 4 cancer was the official diagnosis. Although this type of cancer rarely metastasizes outside of the brain, it is a very aggressive brain cancer with a short survival rate since the tentacles of these tumors drill deep into the healthy cells within the brain.  The surgery provided a better prognosis from the beginning, but the battle must continue full force since the foe is determined to multiply and grow back 100% of the time.   Doug’s first battle plan after the surgery was a clinical trial at OU Medical to blast the cancer cells with radiation and oral chemotherapy.

As Doug and CC prayed for an ongoing battle plan that would target the cancer and build Doug’s immune system at the same time, the Lord provided once again by allowing them to get in contact with a place called Envita Medical Center in Scottsdale, AZ. This treatment center has high level genetic testing that assists in determining the best treatment for accomplishing both of their goals. As of March 15, 2019, Doug completed his second full week at this treatment facility.  The Lord continues to affirm this phase of their battle plan through many things, such as the Lord’s provision of a driver for their trip to Arizona, housing at a church friend's parent's house for the first part of their treatment, incredible innovative doctors ready to tackle Doug’s case, their son Matt handling the home front, their son Dillon available to help whenever needed and of support from their parents, many friends and family. With this type of integrative treatment  much of the expenses are not covered by insurance.  In order to further complicate the financial situation, CC fell and broke her ankle the first of December 2018 and Doug was let go from his job the early part of January 2019. Currently CC’s ankle is healing well thankfully without surgery and Doug is beginning contract work that the Lord provided in the midst of their trials. Right now, they don’t know how much he will be able to work while receiving his IV treatments which makes finances tight. Just as they have seen the Lord’s provisions in incredible ways thus far in Doug’s battle, they are trusting that the Lord will continue to provide in supernatural ways.  As Joshua faced giants in the battle for the Promise Land, the Lord encouraged him in Joshua 1:9.   May Doug and CC be encouraged in their battle with the same words, “Be strong and courageous.  Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”   A Gofundme account for $75,000 has been set up to help with a portion of the costs not covered by insurance.  Doug and CC would be grateful for your willingness to invest in their battle and see how the Lord will be displayed in the midst of this difficult season in their lives.
