Feeding Moms in Chicago

"Now, during this time of crisis, we are committed to expanding our Tribe to provide mama + baby essentials to all [b]lack Chicago families in need."
-Chicago Birthworks Collective
WHY: During these unprecedented times of health and racial pandemics, Black families in Chicago are being hit especially hard with challenges. Pregnant women, new moms, female heads of households are carrying insurmountable weight while navigating through the realities of today. Fears about neighborhood safety in the face of violence and police brutality, job security as an essential low-wage worker, life expectancy as someone who is 4 times more likely to die during childbirth largely due to disparities in medical treatment are just some of what is plaguing this precious group. Affording, finding, and preparing food during this period of unrest is daunting, to say the least.
These women and their families deserve a really good meal.
INTENTION: The purpose of this campaign is to provide fresh, nutritious, lovingly prepared meals to women in need of nourishment for themselves, their unborn and/or young children and their families.
HOW: With your funding we will serve up to 50 meals each week to moms picking up Love Packages from the Chicago Birthworks Collective.
SAMPLE MENU ITEMS:
-Herby Spaghetti with Ground Turkey
-Blackened Salmon with Rice
-Roasted Chicken with Mixed Vegetables
-Veggie or Vegan Stuffed Peppers
-All meals will include fresh fruit and/or salad
WHO: My name is Zuri and I am passionate about feeding people! Food is my tool to express love and gratitude and support so I am always either cooking it, tasting it or discussing it. I believe everyone should consume food that is prepared with great thought and quality ingredients so I only serve items I would eat myself, regardless of the population I am feeding.
I am a trained Postpartum Doula and Community Organizer who has worked in neighborhoods throughout Chicago for over 15 years addressing critical needs in the areas of food security, affordable housing, veteran services and economic development. I support expecting and new moms and families through in-home services and connections to resources. I work as a doula independently, as a contractor with local agencies, and as a volunteer. Please visit my website The Doula Part for more information.
GOAL: Reach 50 food insecure families per week over a 12 week period (total: 600 families)
