Doulas for All: Building a Sustainable Future
Donation protected
Birth doulas have been covered by Medicaid in the District of Columbia since 2022, yet only a handful of doulas are in-network today. The burden of navigating the credentialing process, along with uncertainty about the billing process, HIPAA compliance, and other administrative challenges, is simply too difficult for the average birth worker.
Our 2025 goal is to get 10 more doulas fully credentialed with Medicaid and serving D.C.'s most vulnerable pregnant population, with an additional 25 doulas in-process.
As a doula and Medicaid provider with a background in business and technology, I know how to navigate these challenges and set others up for success. This process takes a great deal of time, energy, and resources.
Here are some of the ways your funds will be put to use:
- Group trainings and application support for doulas
- Administrative support to manage the credentialing process
- HIPAA-compliant software licenses
- Medicaid billing costs (~$25 in fees per client)
- Coaching doulas on serving low-resource clients
The demand for doulas accepting Medicaid is far greater than we can support today, and this process can take several months, during which time doulas often take clients on a volunteer basis. Any additional funds will be used to support volunteer doula work by providing reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs such as hospital parking, meals, and childcare.
Building capacity for doulas to earn a living wage while supporting vulnerable populations is a sustainable solution to the growing challenges in women's reproductive healthcare. Join BirthingKind on our mission to make "doulas for all" a reality in the District of Columbia.
