It's a 1970s roller skating short film, y'all!

Remember roller skating? Frustrated that there's only been 3 roller skating movies in the history of cinema? Love coming-of-age films set in the late 1970s?

If you answered "yes-amundo" to any of these questions, then this fundraiser is for you!

Hi friends. Ugh, someone asking for money, right? Forgive me. But I promise you, it's a story you'll want to exist.

Okay... what in the actual hell is this?

I'm raising money to fund a short film (around 12 minutes) that I will direct called The Runt, and here’s the logline:

Like most 12-year-olds in 1979, Janet Bauer lives for Friday nights at the Moonlight Rollerway. This particular Friday is special – it’s the last one before junior high starts. When Janet finds out the 8th grade girls have chosen her to be the 7th grade “runt,” she decides she must skate with a boy to prove her maturity and avoid this fate, which would ruin her life forever.

It's a love letter to Gen X, to my younger self, to the late 1970's, but *especially* to all of you giving me money.

You’re a director? Since when?

I've been a working TV writer/producer for 23 years (Modern Family, King of the Hill, Raising Hope), and I’ve been on many sets and observed/shadowed some of the best. I directed the 6-episode websieries I wrote, Everyone’s Crazy But Us, and the lead actress got an Emmy nomination out of it, which, if you’re doing the math, means 100% of my directing work is Emmy nominated. I am very lucky to have an outstanding cinematographer on board, Steve Gainer, who has amassed over 70 TV and film credits (On My Block, Schooled, we worked on the show Awkward together). DO NOT watch his work on the Marshmello music video "Happier" unless you want to sob for 10 straight minutes.

Of course! Just let me know and I’ll send. It's about the freedom and danger of the roller rink, so be warned, there's some cussing.

What are you going to do with this short once it’s finished?

I plan to enter it into each and every every film festival it's eligible for. I will not be putting it up on YouTube/Vimeo, as I'm planning to use copyrighted music that would be “for festival use only.” And if it wins at a festival, it will be eligible for an Academy Award. I dream big, baby! If they don’t play me off at the Oscars, I’ll thank you all individually.
