Dr. Alfreda Brown Legacy Leadership Scholarship

“What matters is taking care of people,” she said. “I love this work and will continue it the rest of my life. The work will never stop. It’s so much a part of who I am.”

Dr. Alfreda Brown's legacy cannot be contended with. While her story is still unfolding, her path can leave even the most accomplished individual feeling like her footsteps are too big, too knowledgeable, and impactful to follow. A life spanning seven decades and numerous accolades, Dr. Brown has made a lasting impression on the lives of those she has worked for, worked with, and worked on behalf of. A leader, a mentor, and an innovator; words cannot express what she has done for others or the trails she has blazed.

As a child, she had a vision for her future in which adversity would be challenged by favor and met with opportunity. One such example is catching the attention of RIT former president Albert Simone after writing a research paper on the importance of promoting an inclusive environment, which led to a position leading the commission for promoting pluralism.

Throughout her adulthood, opportunity and hard work helped her realize her childhood vision, and those are the tenets with which this scholarship, in her name, is being created.

This scholarship will be awarded to individuals who present the following attributes in their personal and professional lives.

• Leadership
• Integrity
• Curiosity
• Values diversity, equity, and inclusion

Please join us in supporting Dr. Alfreda Brown’s legacy of advocacy, education, and care by donating to the Dr. Alfreda Brown Legacy Leadership Scholarship fund. These funds, raised and awarded annually, will be awarded to a recipient each year on her birthday, April 11th.

Award and scholarship criteria with application details will be dispersed semiannually in October. Applications are due by March 1st.

In her retirement, Dr. Brown still enjoys writing. Most recently, she revised her inspirational book Word Up, which is available for purchase. Dr. Brown resides in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband, retired Sergeant Major Lawrence D. Brown. There, she loves to host and entertain her blended family of six children, fifteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
