To observe the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s passing the live stage event “Towards the Mountaintop: Commemorating Dr. King” is taking place in Downtown L.A. shortly before the 55th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This docu-play with music is being presented at the end of the Left Coast Forum (www.leftcoastforum.org/). New York Congressional Candidate and Democratic Socialist ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ is giving the Forum’s keynote address.

“Towards the Mountaintop” pays homage to Rev. King’s visionary legacy as a champion of: Black, Civil and Human Rights; Labor; and Peace. Various actors and activists will re-enact Dr. King and other real life equal rights activists. Musicians will provide live Negro Spirituals, soul and gospel music.

Anthony, Ida B. Wells; labor activist Eugene Debs; Civil Rights workers Paul Robeson, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, etc.

On a schedule permitting basis, re-enactors for the Rev. King Commemoration include: GERALD RIVERS as Dr. King; K.B. SOLOMON plays singer/actor/activist Paul Robeson; BEN GUILLORY depicts W.E.B. Du Bois; comedian MONA SHAIKH portrays suffragette Susan B. Anthony; IAN RUSKIN as 1776 revolutionary Thomas Paine; activist HARVEY WASSERMAN is Socialist Party presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs; EVELIA JONES, a direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, will portray her great-grandmother (many times removed); etc. EDDIE WHEELER, who has portrayed Black Panther Bobby Seale, will depict Malcolm X. Soul singer BRENDA LEE EAGER brings Mahalia Jackson back to life and provides live music. TANIA VERAFIELD, star of "The Roller Derby Play", is our emcee.

“Towards the Mountaintop: Commemorating Dr. King” is being presented 3:00 p.m., Aug. 26 at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, 400 W. Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90015 by Cause Celeb Productions. CCP grew out of the 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Hollywood Blacklist on Oct. 27, 2017 at the Writers Guild Theater, which C-SPAN aired on nationwide TV.
