Dr. Tanya Higgins, DVM

Hi, I am raising funds for an amazing human being, Dr. Tanya Higgins. In late August, I took my Beagle, Rocco, to the vet to be put down. I had woken up in the morning to find him laying in his own, dried up waste. It was obvious that he had struggled to stand up for a long time overnight and when I tried to assist him to stand up, he just couldn’t remain standing. He is at least 15 years old and he also had several large tumors that I had been previously advised shouldn’t be removed because of his age. I was told the surgery might be too risky and stressful for him. That morning that I took him to be put down, I met Dr. Tanya Higgins. I had never seen her before at my vet’s office. She told me she was helping out a couple of days a week because my vet’s office was so busy. She examined Rocco and told me that she thought she might be able to help him out with a mix of traditional and integrative veterinary techniques she had learned. I was honest with her and told her that as a single mom, I just couldn’t afford what sounded to be a very expensive treatment that may or may not extend his life. He could have lived another day, another week, another month, or another year. She could make no promises or guarantees. I mentioned to her that I did not want him to suffer needlessly so she offered a solution. She asked me to sign my pup over to her. She would take him home with her and try to treat him there and at her own clinic. Again, no promises or guarantees.
On September 13th, I received a text with photos that she had been able to remove the massive tumor he had growing out of his neck. By then, he had already been with her a few weeks during which time she had given his teeth a cleaning and even extracted 3 of them. The incision was massive, as was the tumor, and she has been caring for him at her home ever since. She is waiting for his incision to heal a bit before attempting to remove a second large tumor that he has over his elbow. He is old and requires diapers or puppy pads so I know that caring for him at no charge to me has meant additional expenses for her as well. As a way to repay her for all she has done for our pup, we offered to volunteer at her clinic once or twice a month. I have mentioned this to her several times over the last few weeks since he’s been with her but yesterday I learned that she is struggling to keep up with the rent at her clinic. She told me she was behind on her rent so she’s not sure what is going to happen with the clinic. She is further dealing with the difficulties associated with having her identity stolen. She mentioned that the last couple of years have been a real challenge for her and it simply amazed me that she still finds it within her huge heart to help out the animals without thinking of helping herself out. For this reason, I am asking that people join me in donating whatever you can to help Dr. Higgins catch up on her rent so she can continue to help out the animals that she so clearly loves and cares about so much. Although I do not know how far behind she is or how much money she is in need of, I am setting an initial goal of collecting at least $2500 for her. Anything at all that you can donate to help will be greatly appreciated and I know it will only help other animals that are lucky enough to come into her clinic, Davie Creek Animal Hospital. She has literally saved Rocco’s life and given him a second chance at life. Let’s help her in her efforts to continue to save lives. Thank you!
