Family and Friends,
My name is Franklin Nichols Rider III, and I have the honor of being accepted to a medical internship and study abroad program through the Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association (TPaIDA). Dr. Lane Rolling, Head of Clinical Education for TPaIDA, accepted 125 students out of the thousands that applied. I was one of the chosen who will represent North Carolina Central University where I am a Junior Pharmaceutical Science major.
The internship is designed for undergraduate students in the biological sciences, pre-medical, and health professions. This is a highly intensive course designed to maximize a practical educational experience with an awareness of global healthcare needs.
I will be introduced to the basic biology of viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and parasites and the diseases they cause in humans. Learning strategies include; lectures, hands-on laboratory work, roundtable discussions, clinical case conferences, diagnosis and treatment of infectious tropical diseases and travel to jungle clinics along the Amazon River.
This opportunity will provide me with an education that reaches beyond the classroom. The learning environments provided by TPaIDA will help me prepare for and decide the direction of my future. The life experiences I will gain assisting the poorest of the poor in Peru will surely change and strengthen my life by the reality of all I will see, hear and feel.
My goal amount includes tuition, air fare and survival gear. By sponsoring me, you will also be providing humanitarian aid. A portion of my tuition will go to the purchase of medicine in Peru for jungle clinics.
