The Dragon Jazz band will be playing with world renowned piano player Marcia Ball and Legendary blues recordist Johnny Nicholas. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we at Dragon Jazz are very excited to be playing with such acclaimed musicians.
The Dragon Jazz Band, made up of students from the Honoka’a High School Jazz Band, will accompany Marsha Ball and Johnny Nicholas on a four island tour starting on the island of Hawaii, then to Maui, Kauai and ending on Oahu.
Marsha Ball - She’s received five Grammy Award nominations, for the 2002’s Presumed Innocent, 2004’s So Many Rivers, 2005’s Live! Down the Road, 2008’s Peace, Love & BBQ and 2010’s Roadside Attractions. The New York Times says, “Marcia Ball plays two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and sings in a husky, knowing voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time.”
Johnny Nicholas - Nicholas formed his first band, The Vikings, then in the mid-1960s, the Black Cat Blues Band. Around 1970, he formed the Boogie Brothers, and while in Chicago, he would record music with Big Walter Horton, Boogie Woogie Red and Robert Lockwood, Jr. In 1974, he created his own single, "Too Many Bad Habits". In Providence, he formed the Johnny Nicholas and the Rhythm Rockers, then began a stint with Asleep at the Wheel in 1978. Since 1981, he runs a Texas roadside restaurant called the Hill Top Café. Nicholas returned to recording blues music in 1991 with Johnny Shines and Snooky Pryor on the album Back to the Country. Since then, he has released one studio album and three live albums while also returning to regular live shows.
The Dragon Jazz Band is comprised of a special core of jazz students from the Honoka’a High School Jazz Band. The High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Gary Washburn, is a group of advanced music students who uphold a long tradition of excellence at Honoka'a High and Intermediate School (considered one of the best in the state). The Jazz band has won multiple awards but by far the grammy award in 2012 takes the cake.
