Dr. Carter's Medical School Fund

My path to medical school has been a long, interesting and deeply personal journey. I have known that I wanted to be in the medical field since the age of six, when my father would take me to different doctors' offices as part of his pharmecudical job. However, I did not go straight to medical school: after briefly attending Syracuse pre-med, I transferred to Temple University for dance. In the back of my mind, I always saw dance as more than an art form: it could be used as a tool to heal.

During my dance career, I injured myself,  went to several different doctors for help and finally sought a Chiropractor. While adjusting me, she asked what I wanted to do after my dance days were over. I saw the writing on the wall and it was at that moment that I decided to become a Chiropractor. I went back to school, graduated and worked for another Chiropractic office for 2 years before opening my own practice. As my thirst for knowledge was ongoing, I continued with several additional certifications in pregnancy, pediatrics and nutrition. I felt that if we ensure the health of the baby before birth, we have a better chance of having a healthier adult.

In 1998 , I was diagnosed with cervical and uterine cancer. My doctor operated immediately. While I was in recovery, it was suggested to me that I begin chemotherapy. Instead, I left the hospital and searched for information and integrative therapies that would help me heal and keep my cancer away. That was 16 years ago and still no cancer.

In 2008, I met Jesse Chew. We fell in love almost instantly. One month after we met, he was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, an especially aggressive form of cancer from which he passed away in 2012. I promised him that I would go to medical school and make a difference in peoples’ lives.  After everything that I have seen with Jesse’s care, I am more determined to help people see that cancer can be changed. The body can change only if we affect the cells, whether by traditional or integrative medecine, or both. Healing starts with research and then education.

Though I had always been interested in the many ways the body can heal, these experiences are what ignited my passion for integrative approaches to medecine. Ever since, I have applied a critical and discerning eye to mainstream medical practices and encouraged my patients to think outside the box when it comes to their health. My vision is to have a healing center where patients and their families can come and stay if extensive treatment is necessary, with a natural pharmacy that specializes in accurate and patient-specific healing.  I believe that we can make integrative medical care reachable for patients that need treatment the most, like Jesse. I have recently been accepted to Oceania University of Medicine, and I am one step closer to my medical doctorate. With your help, I hope to make my lifelong dream a reality.
