Droste Family Adoption
Donation protected
I (Jim) have to admit that there was a significant part of my adult life in which I was unready to be a father and apprehensive about starting a family. In my previous marriage, my apprehension about fatherhood and my readiness for it was a contributing factor to our not having children. When Christina and I met, our shared Christian faith and its priority in our lives changed me, and it significantly altered my perspective about starting a family. We have talked about starting a family together and realized that adoption was likely the most practical route for us to do this. It has been a process that we started not too long after we got married.
Despite our apprehension in asking our family and friends for financial assistance, the simple reality is that we do not have the financial resources to do this alone.
The process of adopting a child is challenging and exhausting as well as financially overwhelming. Our adoption agency, An Open Door Adoption Agency , presented us with the financial break down. The final cost is estimated to between $35,000 and $40,000 dollars. These funds mainly go to the agencies involved in both the United States and the country of origin of the adopted child(ren), the home study (which we are completing through Hillcrest Family Services in Dubuque, IA), doctors that sign off for physical and mental wellness, court fees both in the U.S. and the country of origin of the adopted child(ren), educational courses that we have completed (about 35 hours), and travel for us and the child(ren). Note: Costs involved in domestic adoption are very similar.
So far, we have spent approximately $6,000 of our own money and are prepared to cover whatever cost we have remaining with a personal loan, but we have been encouraged to see what funds may come from the generosity of our friends and family members. Again, knowing full well the burden each family has of their own, we hesitate to even ask, but if you find that you are able to assist us with any financial gift, it would be received as a blessing with grateful hearts.
We are planning to adopt one child, a boy from Ukraine. We have specified that the child be between the ages of 4 and 14. Sometimes there are sibling sets and we are open to the possibility of bringing home two beautiful children should God lead in that direction.
Thank you for taking the time to read our request and please know that our hearts are hopeful in this wonderful journey.
