The current drought in Somalia has left 6.2 million people, over half of the population, in need of humanitarian relief. Close to one million acutely malnourished children will need treatment, including 200,000 severely malnourished children who are more vulnerable than any other group and in need of immediate life-saving support. Ethiopia is also going through its worst drought in 50 years, leaving more than 18 million people in need of aid. The result of this epidemic is the loss of access to reliable, clean drinking water for people in rural communities.
We aim to fundraise for sustainable solutions to facilitate clean, reliable drinking water for rural communities in Somalia and Ethiopia with the backing of locals, experts and organizations who are currently on the ground. We plan to do this by documenting the water related problems faced by locals in rural communities in Somalia and Ethiopia, and understanding their struggles from their own perspective. We plan to get their opinion on how their needs are, with the expertise and expeience of organizations that are currently on the ground. Once we have found a a way to facilitate a sustainable solution with the input of the drought victims and the experts, we plan to use the documentary to fundraise for the solution that's outlined in the documentary which is scheduled for release in early 2018.
Our team is composed of second generation students from Toronto, Ont. whose roots are found in Ethiopia and Somalia who have been looked for a way to contribute to the crisis. It's difficult to sit here in Canada where water is an unspoken right and watch our less fortunate brothers and sisters back home die to due to thirst.
Yasin is an engineering student studying at UOIT who wants to use his technical background and education. Anwar is a graduate from the Film Production program at the Toronto Film School and wants to highlight the problems and solution in a documentary style format. Hussien is a student of Digital Media who plans to use his education to help with the documenting process.
We aim to understand the problem and potential solutions, but we need your help. We have already saved up and worked part time and full time jobs as students to cover our flights and accomodation, but we need help to buy the equipment necessary to create this documentary. The funds raised on this Gofundme page will be STRICTLY used towards buying production equipment.
This team is what we have so far. If any person or organization can see a way that we can work together towards our goal, please dont hesitate to reach out to us.
