Help Put Green Roofs on Schools Across the US!

Did you know, the average child is spending less than ten minutes of unstructured playtime outdoors per day and spending more than seven hours in front of a screen?
Children need significantly more time outside than adults in order to support their mental and physical development, and those who do spend more time outside are found to be happier as adults. Unfortunately, between school, homework and part-time jobs, spending time outdoors is increasingly challenging for students.
But you can help!
Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez's proposed Public School Green Rooftop Program would allocate federal funding to putting green roofs on schools and supporting the creation of outdoor classrooms.
Outdoor classrooms create safe learning spaces for students where they can engage in important educational activities. This is the future of education as students do not have to be stuck inside to learn! Vicki Sando from PS41 in New York shares the positive benefits of the outdoor classroom at her school in the video above!
For many public schools, installing a green roof and outdoor classroom is costly and inaccessible but the Public School Green Rooftop Program would make it easy for all public schools to take advantage of the benefits of green roofs!
In addition to safe learning space for students, the Public School Green Rooftop Program will support healthy communities and create local career opportunities (more than 29,000 direct and indirect jobs as a result!)
The Public School Green Rooftop Program has not yet passed and it needs more public attention to help it get the co-sponsors it needs!
What can you do? Send an email to your Congressperson using this prefilled form and voice your support!
In addition, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, a partner organization working directly with Nydia Velázquez's office is seeking support from the public to raise funds to pay for a lobbyist team. Lobbyists will increase the chances of getting co-sponsors for this Bill and helping it pass and we want to pay them for their time and dedication!
If you want to support students and bring jobs to your community, we ask that you send an email to your Congressperson and pitch in what you can to help us pass the Public School Green Rooftop Program!
