Support for the Richardson Family

Doug “Dangle” Richardson went to be with the Lord on Thursday after a brave battle with Osteosarcoma. We knew Doug as a devoted husband and father who loved his family fiercely, a dedicated Marine, and a loyal friend. He is loved and will be missed by many.

Captain Douglas “Dangle” Richardson graduated from Officer Candidate School in 2008 and went on to graduate from Virginia Tech in 2010. He was designated as a Naval Flight Officer in 2013
and served as an EA-6B Prowler Electronic Countermeasures Officer from 2014-2018. Doug deployed to Iwakuni, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program and to Incirlik, Turkey in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE. All told, he had over 1000 flight hours and nearly 300 combat flight hours. Doug was a part of VMAQT-1, VMAQ-2, VMAQ-3, and finished his Marine Corps career with VMFAT-101 after he was selected for transition to become a F/A-18 Weapon Systems Officer in 2018.

Marine Corps aviation is a small community filled with outsized personalities. “Dangle” was a friend to all. He comprised everything you’d want in a fellow colleague: competent and smooth in the aircraft, always willing to lend a hand, and a great bar act that is hard to follow.  His unique cooking talent and ability to throw a party established the world famous “Dangle’s Diner.” No matter how far from home or austere the environment, Doug found a way to serve food to his fellow squadron mates and boost morale in the process. He was a dedicated Hokie fan, loved aviation, and embodied everything a United States Marine should be. Doug will be remembered for always being there for others and actively contributed to maintaining a cohesive unit.  If you ever see a small VMAQ-2 “zapper” stuck on a museum aircraft or officer’s club bar - Doug was the culprit!

Doug’s wife, Amanda, and his two daughters, Alexia and Hailey, walked through every step of Doug’s valiant year and a half long battle with cancer with him. It’s now our turn to walk alongside Amanda, Alexia, and Hailey as they grieve the devastating loss of Doug and begin the difficult journey of adjusting to life without their husband and father. They need our prayers and support in the days, months, and years ahead and this is just one way we can offer a helping hand in their time of grief. Please consider giving if you feel led and flood the heavens with prayers for this sweet family.
