Duarte Dance is a non-profit after-school youth dance program offered at the Duarte Teen Center. This public dance program is open to all teens in the Duarte community and is part of the Center’s mission to offer disadvantaged youth productive and creative outlets for after school. Programs like this have a proven track record of boosting academic performance, reducing risky behaviors, promoting physical health, and providing a safe, structured environment for the children of working parents.
This year the dance program is home to 20-25 dancers from the ages of 13 to 19 for whom dance has become a safe creative outlet after school. The majority of the dancers in the program had never taken a formal dance class before coming to the Teen Center, let alone been a part of any clubs or sports. Through the Teen Center, these girls are able to discover the beauty of dance - and with that dance has became an outlet for the pain that many of them have suffered having come from disadvantaged communities, broken homes, exposure to domestic and gang violence, amongst other economic and physical hardships. And though they are only able meet in a small room with no dance floor and for the past two years have been using portable mirrors to assist them in learning, these girls couldn’t be happier than when they’re dancing.
Unfortunately, though the Teen Center is able to support the dance program itself, it lacks funding to pay for many of the things that dance groups in more affluent communities take for granted. Namely, proper dance shoes and performance uniforms. The Duarte Dancers have a big performance coming up May 15th and desperately need uniforms and shoes!
That is they need your help! Please donate today so that these dancers can buy shoes and performance uniforms and be able to perform with confidence! Help spread the word! Your donation means the world to these dancers!
These kids fight tooth and nail to just make it through life. When they get to dance they get to express themselves through their art. They become a family in that room. They support each other, they hold each other up. It’s not just about the dancing any more. It’s about finding strength in each other. Before each performance they band together and become one. These funds could be a shining light for them, something encouraging in their lives something they could be forever proud that they were a part of.
Please help Duarte Dance by offering your contribution today!
$30 dollars pays for a pair of shoes!
$50 dollars pays for a uniform!
Any additional funding recieved would go towards entrance fees to future competitions. These girls have never had the funding to compete and it would mean the world to them!
