Hey friends!
I was lucky enough to get accepted to the Code Fellows bootcamp in Portland. Hizzah!
What's the money for?
The bootcamp is actually $5000, but I got some of it covered. Basically I'm asking for money to help cover the rest of the costs, and for a new computer. My Macbook Pro crapped out a while back and I've been using my work computer for work-related tasks and my tablet for personal stuff. If you watch Silicon Valley, you already know that in general it's not a good idea to write code on a company computer, hence why I'm trying to get a new one. (If you start a company based on code created on a work computer, your job can claim intellectual property rights over your code since you used their equipment to create it, which could lead to them taking over your company, suing you or requiring you pay royalties.)
Some background
I'm a problem-solver, constant learner, and lover of all things tech.
For the past few years I've been trying to teach myself to code. However, I quickly learned that in order for me to fully grasp the concepts and logic of a new language, I would need to be in a more traditional classroom environment.
After code school I plan on getting involved with a computer science volunteer programs for under-priviliedged youth. I also recently created a networking group for underrepresented folks in tech. With my new skills, I'd love to mentor people learning code, or have my own events where I help teach people to code.
What is code school?
Code school is a fast-paced, collaborative environment where aspiring programmers and developers learn to create apps, programs, web sites and solutions for everyday tech problems. My specific course takes place over 1 month, 5 days a week, with 3 hours of classroom time and 3 hours of lab time daily. I will be keeping my full time job as Shift Lead at Squarespace, and I plan to use what I've learned here to become even better at my job. I've done a couple online self-paced video courses, but I have realized that I am very much a people person and I need the classroom environment.
What will I be learning?
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, various frameworks and libraries to create fully-functional web apps as well as computer science concepts such as data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented programming.
Whether or not you donate, I appreciate you taking the time to read this!
