Durham Public K Teachers Need Help

Donation protected
A dedicated team of Durham NC public school kindergarten teachers NEED YOUR HELP!

Jackie MacDougall, Jacinta Adams, Christy Mullen, and Tarra Barrett have been working together to educate a diverse population of kindergarten students at our school for the past 3 years.

We LOVE our school! It is a Title I public elementary school that has 650 students representing a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. 67% qualify for free and reduced lunch.

We LOVE our students! We celebrate the diversity they represent. They are black, white, Hispanic, mixed, and Asian. We also have immigrants from the Congo, Afghanistan, Syria, Turkey, Jordan, and Honduras. They come to us with a wide range of school readiness – from not knowing what a letter is to reading on a first grade level.

We LOVE Kindergarten! K is like no other grade level and it’s not like the K you remember. It’s a transition year that lays the foundation for everything that comes after. It's a year of  learning how to be successful in a school environment, while at the same time working towards mastery of rigorous state standards. We want all students to develop a love of learning. We keep them engaged by activating their curiosity and finding playful yet challenging approaches to the curriculum. We nurture our diverse children into a vibrant learning community.

We are always looking for ways to improve our practice. How can we best meet the needs of each child whether it’s academic or social-emotional? That’s where we need your help. Funding and resources for professional development is extremely limited. Much of our professional development comes from leaders in K-5, which does not always translate to developmentally appropriate strategies for our young learners. We would like to learn from leading experts in kindergarten in order to continue our journey of mastering the art of teaching 5 and 6 year olds.

We are asking for funds to send our team to the National Kindergarten Conference for 3 days. It's July 10 - 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Learn more about it here:  I Teach K!

Costs include:

·        3 Day Registration for 4 teachers      $2316

·        Airline tickets for 4                                     $2284

·        3 nights at The Venetian in a quad
                                 (conference rate)                     $675

Plus estimated Go Fund Me pricing and fees

                                                                             Total: $5275

When do we need this? The sooner the better.
We would like to secure the best price on airline tickets, registar for the sessions that most suit our needs, and reserve our hotel room. Can we raise this money within the next week? We’d love to have the funds secured no later than April 10.

To show our appreciation, every donor will receive a thank you note and a list of our Top Ten Kinder Funnies. Here’s a preview:

#10 - K Philosophy 101 written by a 6 year old.
             How to be happy.
             1. First you have to be sad.
             2. Next you think about what to do.
             3. Then you think to sing. La. La.

Thank you so much for your help!
