Dustin Simmons Memorial Fund for Finn
May 2, 1981 - October 21, 2020
In memory of Dustin Simmons, we are setting up a trust for his 15-month old baby, Finn, to help pay for Finn’s education and future needs. It is our hope that this fund will help Finn feel the deep love of his dad as he grows up and finds his own way in the world.
Dustin was a loving stay-at-home dad to Finn and step-daughter, Layla, and he was a devoted partner to Amy Huff, with whom he was planning their wedding on November 21, 2020.
Dustin was born into the world as a quiet, easy-going baby in May of 1981 to Curt and Debra Simmons, nabbing the choice spot of the middle child out of five siblings. Chad, Cheree, Desiree, and Cory were constants in his life with the Simmons family's way of loving the whole person with generosity, kindness, and laughter. Dustin’s one-of-a-kind way of doing things brought laughter and wonder to his family.
As a child, Dustin tried many different activities, from soccer and swim team to piano and dance. He fell in love with music when he began playing the trumpet in middle school, and he played in pep and jazz band at Nevada Union High School. Dustin excelled in math and science, and he found a true passion and skill in computer hardware and networking in high school and college classes. Dustin loved to play Magic the Gathering with friends, and he was a formidable opponent in many board games and computer games. He had a quick, clever mind that made him a pleasure to game with, and he could win or lose with great appreciation for others’ skills.
When Dustin began to experience the schizophrenia that he lived with his adult life, his great fear and sadness was that many people with schizophrenia lose their family. His parents, siblings, and other relatives supported Dustin in his struggles, helped him live independently, and celebrated his successes as he navigated his life.
More than anything else, Dustin wanted a partner and children to love. He was able to realize that dream when he reconnected in 2015 with a friend from high school choir, Amy. Dustin and Amy made a home together with Layla and then celebrated the addition of Finn to their lives. Most recently, Dustin taught himself how to play bass guitar so that he could share his love of music with Finn.
Dustin was taken just as he was getting to have the life that he never thought he would have. He had a kind and strong heart, and he is well-loved and deeply missed.
