Don protégé
You may just be learning the news, but this summer brought the Lee family unfortunate news that Dwight was diagnosed with cancer in July. The cancer (stage three invasive squamous cell carcinoma) originated in his tonsil and had spread to his lymph nodes, where a lump was detected. This came as a total shock to the family as Dwight is a non-smoker and maintains a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise. The family acted quickly and with the help of a family friend, Dwight boarded a last-minute flight and began treatment at the esteemed Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Louise (Lulu) was later able to join him and they have been in NYC since August. They are fortunate to be staying with family in the city, but do not know when they will be able to return back to their home in Michigan (hopefully by the holidays).
Dwight’s in excellent hands with the skilled doctors at Sloan-Kettering and has completed 35 sessions of radiation therapy and 2 out of 3 rounds of chemotherapy. However, the treatment has taken a toll on his immune system and he recently spent 7 nights in the hospital to monitor dangerously low white blood cell counts. He will go through his last round of chemo treatment once his counts are restored to safer levels.
I am starting this GoFundMe page as Dwight and Lulu have done so much for others over the years, and now it is time we do something for them. They could use support in funding the cost of Ubers to get to and from appointments, as Dwight is not permitted to take the train or bus. They also have incurred significant medical bills and have special daily needs. Any bit is truly helpful.
Lulu mentioned that Dwight is always very positive, despite the unfortunate circumstances. Whenever I get a chance to see Dwight on FaceTime, he always has a huge smile on his face. Let’s keep the thoughts and prayers coming for the Lees.
