Support Rio Grande do Sul Flood Victims

Hi everyone,

My name is Rachel Cunha. I’m a Brazilian American living in the Seattle area for over 20 years.

I’m reaching out to let you know I’m fundraising for a cause very close to my heart. In the past month, my home state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil suffered the worst flooding in their modern history, comparable to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Millions of people were affected, and it will take years for them to recover.

Watching the news made me feel so helpless about this tragedy, but than I decided to take action. Myself and other members of the Brazilian community here in Seattle began to organize to help those desperately in need. We are in close contact with volunteers on the ground and non-profits we personally know and trust, and began coordinating our efforts to raise money towards helping those affected.

With the money we have collected so far, we have started to make an impact on those that need help the most. For example, on June 8th 1,200 hot meals were given to a hardworking, poor island community that still has no running water or electricity a month after the flooding started. While we are grateful that we were able to make a small impact, there’s still so much more that needs to be done.

With that in mind, we’re hosting a Charity Bazaar in partnership with MSBN Church in Bellevue. Here are the details:
