SheWulf: An International Walk 4 BC

What if I told you I was going to relive the ancient epic of Beowulf? - the story of a brave warrior who sailed to Denmark to slay the marauding monster, Grendel? Only this fight is between me, a battle-worn cancer survivor and a monster that is cancer. All to raise needed funds for breast cancer patient services in New Hampshire and Denmark.
I'm Carolyn Choate, a 58-year old breast cancer survivor from New Hampshire and I'M DOING IT! LEAVING JULY 24! I'm hiking SOLO from Copenhagen to Lejre, Denmark, where archeologists found evidence of mead halls dating back to the 8th century, when Beowulf made the fabled journey to save the Danes from certain death in Grendel's grasp.
Then: '03, celebrating the end of chemo for breast cancer with my dear family: MacKenzie, 9, Sydney, 12, & hubby, Gordon. So much to live for!
Now: many surgeries later - a 2nd mastectomy in '12 - glad to be alive, & paying it forward with a unique fundraiser for breast cancer support services in NH & Denmark.
While paying all my own travel expenses, 100% of the funds raised will be donated and split between the NH Breast Cancer Coalition and the Danish Breast Cancer Organisation for patient support services.
Why Beowulf? As a literature major in college & grad school, I questioned why the majority of western civilization's greatest epics were seen through the male lens. Homer's Odyssey & the Iliad, Dante's Divine Comedy, and, of course, Beowulf. Don't you think it's time a feminine hero retrace Beowulf's steps? - a woman who represents the countless battles fought against breast cancer across the globe by women of every age, race, and creed?
Yes, the monster that is cancer nearly took my life at 45, but I've been fighting back ever since for its victims. Many need support as they struggle financially through treatment. Through your donation, patients with little or no reserves will get needed cash infusions for groceries, rent, and/or transportation to treatment. Last year alone, the NH Breast Cancer Coalition's Patient Services Outreach helped 72 women.
Large or small, your support will help women in my home state of New Hampshire and women in Denmark, the amazing host country for my epic adventure. Those wishing to send a check instead of using a credit card, are encouraged to make it out to: Carolyn Choate, PO Box 1631, Hollis, NH 03049. Your contribution will be recognized on the Go Fund Me page nonetheless.
Tak og et godt helbred! (Thank you and good health!)
