Dylan’s Snowdon Climb - Wheelchair Fundraiser!

Dylan Driver is a four year old boy who loves his cars, books, swimming, adventures, and also has grade 5 quadriplegic dystonic cerebral palsy, which means he needs full physical support in all areas of his life, as he is pre-verbal and can’t walk, crawl, kneel, sit, stand or eat unaided. He sustained a brain injury during his birth, leading to severe oxygen deprivation - Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy grade 3 (H.I.E)

He was not expected to survive but thanks to the efforts of his dad (who happens to be a SWAST paramedic!) and medical teams, he regained a heartbeat and a week later came off life support. He’s been kicking life in the butt ever since; despite being severely affected physically, his cognition and sense of humour is amazing and he LOVES life.

Dylan is due to start school this year, having just turned four, and he needs a suitable wheelchair to do so. He’s got a 3 wheeler off-road disability buggy, and a seat for in the house, but what he desperately needs is a chair that can be used on the playground and then into class, out and about as well. You’d think it would be pretty straightforward to get one from the NHS but no; he’s on a waiting list for an assessment which is horrifically long - he starts school before he’ll even be assessed. His 3 wheeler does the job for short trips but it’s just not structurally suitable for his needs in the long term, given its lack of postural support. It’s also too big to be used indoors.

Therefore, friend of the family, SWAST paramedic, mountaineer and veteran, Mo, came up with the crazy idea of getting Dylan up to the top of Snowdon, to raise funds for a suitable wheelchair! Dylan loves adventures, Dylan’s family love adventures, Mo loves any excuse to scale a mountain…so here we are. On June 23rd (weather dependent) Dylan, family and friends will be climbing to the summit of Snowdon. Dylan will be pushed or carried all of the way there. We’d love any support available to spur us on in this crazy endeavour!

We are planning on doing the walk on Sunday 23rd of June, as long as the weather is good enough.
