Help My Grandparents Find a Home
8/18/21 Update: The family is currently living with my parents in our doublewide trailer. My friend is letting me stay with her to make space for everyone. We are still searching for an affordable rental or house to purchase for them. My grandma, Sandy's, story was featured on Marketplace: https://www.marketplace.org/2021/08/18/i-just-dont-know-where-were-gonna-end-up/
Hello! My name is Tracy and I'm fundraising for my grandparents and aunt. My family is doing what they are able but it is not enough, so I'm requesting assistance for them to put some money down to reduce monthly payments or help tide them over until they can find a new home to buy or rent. They were given less than 28 days notice to move out of their current home.
My grandfather worked for PanAm Airlines for many, many years before he lost his job and the majority of his pension when they went bankrupt. He worked well into his 70's doing physical labor and getting by as best he could. The additional two companies he worked for also went bankrupt. He broke his hip at one company and they wouldn't take him back. Due to health problems, my aunt and grandparents take care of each other, like most people have to do these days. My aunt is totally disabled due to a horrific car accident many years ago.
They have been renting for the past 21 years in a house that the landlord has not maintained. When they moved in, the carpets were not replaced and they haven't been once. The deck isn't usable along with many other things. But they were able to get a good deal on rent because of the house problems. Now that the real estate market is hot, their landlord is selling the house (problems and all) and forcing them to relocate without much notice.
At this stage, it's best for them to buy a home that they can be in charge of. My grandfather is a veteran and can qualify for VA loans, but they need some assistance with the down payment. In the meantime, they will need to rent or find somewhere to live.
Our whole family has been through a number of unfortunate health circumstances that have been life-changing over the years and we've never asked for help before. If comfortable, please share this post.
Thank you for reading through their story.
