Help Cockermouth Wasps Reach Twickenham!!

Cockermouth Wasps 22/23 Season has been extended this is due to our successful Papa Johns's National Community Cup run!

On the 8th April, the wasps played a doubleheader game away at Upper Eden. This was the final game of the season and the opening knockout round on the Road to Twickenham.

The previous week Cockermouth had ended Upper Edens 3 year unbeaten streak so confidence was high, but away games don’t get much tougher than Upper Eden. In a fierce contest the Wasps prevailed 18-15 winners and earned another game.

The Wasps sit in the Counties 1 Championship group. This means that we can be drawn Home or away against any teams in our level from across the country.

We were lucky to get a Home Draw in round 2 but faced another team on the back of a 3 year unbeaten run in West Hartlepool the Durham and Northumberland Champs! In Typical wasps fashion we ground out the result giving the fans a thrilling contest and a 20-19 Win. Talk about Pressure!

So round 3 the quarter-final. Our toughest test yet, East Yorkshire champions Goole Rufc. A 9 am start a packed coach with players and travelling support for a 3hr drive. The wasps fell behind 7-0 in what looked like it could be a really bad day at the office, but wasps play best when under pressure with their backs against the wall. Wasps scored 3 tries all converted to take the lead 21-7. In a tense finish, Goole Pulled back 2 tries but was unconverted to leave the Wasps with a 21-17 lead and the victory! Another fantastic game and Goole have been the best hosts and opponents we have faced in years.

The downside to the cup run is the growing costs involved. The Goole trip cost over £1,000 just to get the boys on the field for kick-off.

Our semi-final draw has drawn us away to Harlow in Essex. The cost of this trip is estimated to triple at least, Plus if successful 3 weeks later we would return to London to play at Twickenham. So in total, our Success in the cup could approach £8,000 in the space of 6 Weeks. As an amateur club, this is a huge burden but also a huge opportunity for the Club to represent Cumbria at the home of English rugby.

The funds raised if we hit our target wouldn’t actually cover all of our costs but would ease the pressure on the club, especially with us being promoted next year and facing 7-8 Away games in a season.

Wed like to thank you in advance for any and all donations and hope to see you at a game in the near future to thank you in person
