Help us bring Lucy home

Hi,

 

My name is Tricia. I am fundraising on behalf of my sister Lucy Ward, who had a devastating stroke on 6th October 2021. Lucy is 35 years old.

 

 

Lucy was working as an English language teacher in Siracusa, Sicily when she had the stroke. It has affected her brainstem. Before surgery to remove the blood clot the doctors warned us that they did not know that she would survive. Being the strong fighter that she is Lucy did survive but she was unable to breathe without a ventilator, and was unable to move as well as remaining in a coma for several days.

 

 

When Lucy regained consciousness she was still unable to breathe for herself, but over the following couple of weeks she regained this ability. She is also able to move her head and facial features including her mouth, tongue and eyes. She tries to speak to us but is unable to - we are hoping that this is temporary as she has a tracheostomy that was put in to allow her to be ventilated. She can feel her arms and legs, but is unable to move from her neck down. The doctors are hoping that she will eventually regain the ability to move with physiotherapy, but this is a long way from certain.

 

We need to bring Lucy home to Shropshire in the UK from Sicily. It is important that she is near to her family to help her recovery, and so that we can look after her. As she was in Sicily longer term for her job she does not have travel insurance that may have helped cover the cost of repatriation, so we are having to find a way to cover the cost. We need nearly £23,000 for this alone. This fund raiser is to help cover this cost and any other as yet unknown expenses, medical or otherwise.

 

 

 

Lucy was just living her life, making plans with her boyfriend Luca, and all that normality was taken away from her by the stroke. Please consider helping us to help our brilliant, beautiful and brave Lucy. We have all been devastated by what has happened to her, and are extremely grateful for your help.

Ciao, mi chiamo Tricia, sto creando questa raccolta fondi a beneficio di mia sorella, Lucy Ward, che ha subito un attacco ischemico, il 6 ottobre 2021. Lucy ha soltanto 35 anni.

 

 

Lucy al momento dell’attacco, lavorava come insegnante di inglese a Siracusa, Sicilia. L’ischemia, ha interessato la arteria basilare, arteria che si occupa di irrorare uno dei punti più importanti del cervello, quello deputato al respiro, motilità, etc. Prima dell’intervento, atto a rimuovere i trombi, i neurochirurghi, ci hanno avvertiti, che non non erano sicuri che lei riuscisse a sopravvivere. Ma considerando la donna forte che è, è riuscita a sopravvivere, sebbene impossibilitata a respirare da sola, completamente paralizzata, e in coma per diversi giorni.

 

 

Quando Lucy è uscita dal coma, era ancora completamente dipendente dal ventilatore per respirare, ma nelle settimane successive, sta riuscendo a recuperare, e adesso respira quasi autonomamente. Riesce anche ad utilizzare la mimica facciale, incluse bocca, lingua e occhi. Prova a parlare, ma per il momento non può – speriamo che sia appunto temporaneo, anche perché al momento è stata tracheotomizzata, per permettere di ventilarla. Lucy ha sensibilità in molte parti del corpo, ma non è in grado di poter muovere quasi nulla in pratica, dal collo in giù. I medici sperano che possa recuperare con la fisioterapia alcune funzioni e motilità, ma è difficile capire quanto tempo possa passare e cosa possa recuperare.

 

 

Vogliamo riportare Lucy a casa, nello Shropshire, Regno Unito, dalla Sicilia. E’ importante riportarla lì, cosicché, stia vicina alla famiglia, e aiutarla nel recupero. Considerando che Lucy stava ormai in pianta stabile in Italia causa lavoro, non possiede un’assicurazione, che avrebbe aiutato a coprire i costi del rimpatrio. Ed è per questo che stiamo cercando di trovare dei modi per coprire l’intero costo. Abbiamo bisogno soltanto per il rimpatrio di 23.000 sterline ( circa 27.000 Euro). Questa raccolta fondi è effettivamente adibita a coprire il costo di queste spese e di eventuali altri costi, medici e non.

 

 

Lucy stava semplicemente vivendo la sua vita, facendo piani col suo fidanzato, Luca, e tutto di un tratto, tutta la normalità è stata risucchiata via dall’ischemia. Per favore aiutateci per aiutare la nostra brillante, bellissima e coraggiosa Lucy. Siamo tutti distrutti da quello che le è successo, ed estremamente grati per il vostro aiuto.
