LEGWORK FOR LUNGS 5K

A 5k to raise funds for lung cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

The Future We Are Creating

Hello, my name is Nastassja Kuznetsova, the Race Director for this 5k. Even though I'm in 8th grade, I still hope I can make a difference.

Lately, it seems cancer is everywhere – in books, movies, a slew of fundraisers like this one, and most terrifyingly people’s lives. I want to see the day where we have conquered cancer, and the funds I will raise will help me be able to say that I helped make it happen.

Another reason of why I decided to fund lung cancer research is that I’ve noticed breast cancer seems to get a lot of attention, while lung cancer, the 2nd-most common cancer, according to cdc.gov, receives less support overall. All you have to do is ask Google: if you type in Breast Cancer 5k, you receive about 2,780,000 results, but switch one word to make the search term Lung cancer 5k, you’re down to only 297,000.

Too many of us know someone with a cancer diagnosis, and Memorial Sloan Kettering, the worlds oldest and largest private cancer center, has been trying to bring down this rate with much success for generations. This center, established in 1884, has had over 130 years of care, research, and educational programs, so if any place announces groundbreaking new research, it will be here. I wan't to know I helped make it happen, and the more people that can say that, the better.

Our Story & Why You Should Support Us

My personal reason to raise money for lung cancer is I know a fantastic, wonderful person who was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer 2 years ago. The 5 year survival rate for this cancer is 1% (cancer.org), but she is nowhere near death. She’s fighting because she must fight, but most importantly she is living, and enjoying her life, friends, and family. I have known her for most of my life, and I know the best way I could thank her for what she has given to me is by helping people in her situation. She is a patient at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and has highly recommended this hospital as an organization truly worth donating to.

Where this Money Goes

Being an avid runner, I thought a 5k run would be a great way to raise money for lung cancer research, since you need lungs that are in great shape in order to run.

So, I contacted Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the hospital where the friend mentioned above is a patient, and asked for their help. MSKCC reviewed my proposal and approved it. Now all I have to do is…actually organize an entire 5k.

My 5k is called the Legwork for Lungs 5k and Mile Walk. Memorial Sloan Kettering only allows a certain percentage of the registration fee to go towards expenses - only 20% - and that's for good reason. They want all participants in the event to know that the majority of the money they paid goes towards lung cancer research. However, our expenses are much larger than that and they have a funny way of building as we get closer to our event. Just renting our relatively small venue, Mountain Park, for 2 hours is about $500! Please help us be able to donate our funds by helping us cover our expenses with this fundraiser.
