Hello! My name is Meagan Dutka. I am a student at the University of Winnipeg, where I study Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Studies.
I also have the great privilege of being the Communications Coordinator for an incredible organization called Eagles of Change. Eagles of Change is a nonprofit NGO based in Lusaka, Zambia. If you are unfamiliar, Zambia is a country in the Southern region of Africa. Eagles of Change has two main objectives: to reduce the prevalence of substance abuse amongst Zambian youth, primarily by providing vulnerable children with access to education, and to promote awareness and dialogue about mental health while reducing the stigma often associated with mental health challenges.
For the 2023 school year, I have collaborated with Eagles of Change on a Child Education Sponsorship project. Our goal is to be able to provide 100 children with primary education at John-Howard School, which is situated in a low-income neighbourhood. Many families and orphans face resource scarcity, particularly within this community, and experience barriers to sending their children to school. For example, children must be able to pay for supplies and uniforms to attend school, and some schools require students to pay school fees. Additionally, many young girls do not attend school because they cannot afford essential feminine hygiene products. This fundraiser will remove some of the barriers for these children so they can be provided with education and skills to find long-term employment to sustain themselves and their families.
Your donations can have the following impact (listed in USD):
- $10: Provide masks and soap to 10 students for the prevention of Covid-19 or buy a school bag for one child
- $15: Buy school shoes for one child for one year
- $25: Buy a school uniform for one child for one year
- $40: Provide girls with sanitary feminine products to keep them in school
- $50: Provide essential books and supplies for one student
- $70: Provide schools fees to send one child to Primary school for one year
- $80: Provide school fees to send one child to Junior school for one year
- $100: Assist locally trained volunteers in providing mentorship lessons to youth on substance abuse, mental health and child marriage
- $150: Cover one child's educational expenses for one full year
This January, I will travel to Lusaka to pursue a practicum placement with Eagles of Change. As a result, I will have the opportunity to meet the children your donations will impact and be a part of distributing these funds. In addition, donors may receive updates about how their donations have been used and progress reports on the project's success.
