Easing Financial Burdens for Mike Risney's Family

Donation protected
On October 31st, 2023, my brother-in-law, Michael Risney, received the devastating diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease. This news was a severe shock to Mike, my sister Ashley, and their two boys.

Mike is a devoted husband to Ashley, whom he has been married to for 17 years, and a loving father to their sons, Michael Jr. (17) and Teddy (15). In my opinion, Mike is one of the best brothers-in-law one could ask for. He is an incredibly intelligent and caring man, a trait evident in every facet of his life—from teaching and working to scout leading, volunteering, and his deep love for his family. Mike has always been there to help anyone in need and is always ready to answer any question.

Mike has been a dedicated steamfitter at MMC for over 10 years, where he also passionately taught apprentice classes there and at the union hall 464. He is a respected teacher and coworker at the company. Sadly, upon his diagnosis, Mike had to step back from teaching and fieldwork due to the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy and the symptoms of this terrible cancer. He now works in the office. Throughout his ordeal, MMC has been a tremendous source of support.

Mike has become an inspiration to many. While others might have given up, Mike has faced his illness head-on, accepting the challenge to fight. Since his diagnosis, Mike has undergone biweekly chemotherapy sessions and at-home chemotherapy treatments. Due to the aggressiveness of the cancer, his treatment now includes weekly chemotherapy and radiation to combat its spread.

At just 40 years old, no one expects to face such a dire situation. Despite his condition, Mike and Ashley continue to work to support their family. However, Mike has recently been too weak to work. They do not have extra life insurance policies and have limited savings, which has added to their worries. Mike is deeply concerned for Ashley and their boys, fearing for their future without him. My sister is facing the prospect of becoming a widow, and my nephews will lose their father.

Mike has fought valiantly, but unfortunately, the cancer is winning. We don’t know when the end will come, but we know it is near. Mike's final wishes include a funeral with a proper burial, a daunting financial challenge on Ashley's income alone. She is also worried about keeping their home, as Mike was the primary breadwinner.

Our hope is that donations from this GoFundMe can help ease some of their financial stresses and allow them to focus on each other during this difficult time. These donations will go towards his funeral costs and their house. We deeply appreciate any and all help given, no matter the amount. Your support means the world to us, and we cannot express our gratitude enough.
