East Farndon War Memorial
Unveiled initially on 3rd October 1920, East Farndon's War Memorial remembers the fallen of World Wars I and II, including five airmen killed in a training accident close to East Farndon. One hundred and two years after its construction, the memorial urgently needs significant repair.
The Parish Council has set up a working group with the following members:
Councillor Scott Harrison
Mrs Jess Oakden
Mrs Judy Hodgetts
Miss Joanna Shaw
Mrs Caroline Burton (Parish Clerk)
Mr Tom Knott
Repairs to the memorial will be carried out by local builder John Smith and will include:
- Clean down of stonewalling and patch repoint with lime mortar.
- Replacement of steps and step risers with Yorkstone.
- Replacement of the gravelled areas with Yorkstone paving.
Total costs are expected to be approximately £10000. Although this is a significant amount of money, these much-needed repairs will improve the cosmetics of the memorial and, more importantly, protect it for future generations. Our aim is to have work completed in time for Remembrance Day 2023.
To generate interest and momentum for the fundraising, we will be holding events throughout the next 12 months. Check out https://eastfarndon.org/ for more details or, visit our Facebook page.
