Easter Morning Stroke
Donation protected
I'm not even sure how much to make my goal amount. ***Edited to make it a little more clear and put pretty much all updates on the top***
I woke him at around 2pm and he had some trouble walking but he thought he had just slept wrong. His speech was fine, his mobility was not. His smile, his tongue, everything was fine... By 2:40 he was asking to go to the hospital ER. From that ER he was transferred after 3 hours and a "clean scan" to another hospital because and I do quote they "do not have the equipment to help him". A second MRI with contrast and without was taken at the secondary hospital.
He had had a stroke. Derik is only 45. Too young to have experienced a stroke. We were in hospital 3 nights, 4 days, our kids stayed with family friends... And we are uninsured. We live in Texas so we get SNAP and Medicaid for our kids, but we do not qualify for Medicaid for adults. I worked before this, Derik stayed home with our kids and homeschooled the oldest. Our social worker we were given in hospital was less than helpful. She had to be pressured to find us a walker to take home and to get us free prescriptions for Derik's high blood pressure (One of the physical therapists in the hospital pressured her) But she told me not to even bother applying for disability because it takes a long time, she would not help me fill out any paperwork or tell me how. I'm not an idiot, but I am when I'm under stress. I applied for disability anyway, the interview was on May 12th, 2022 and we were told it could take up to 6 months for a decision. Since we are uninsured, Derik was unable to get any professional help for his PT and OT we are doing everything at home with the help of Google and YouTube.
I have also: Talked to HHS about being a paid caregiver but in the state of Texas a spouse cannot be a paid caregiver. A parent and an adult child can but not the spouse. I have contacted Dollarfor.org to help us with our bills from the secondary hospital as I was able to have the first hospital's bills forgiven, the secondary hospital is in another county in Texas so they said we did not qualify for help since we were not residents of their county. I have had those said family friends who watched our children build a ramp for Derik since the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) could not help us nor find us help. Health and Human Services (HHS) in Texas rejected, once again, the application for Medicaid for adults with disabilities because we "make" more than $300 a month (our bills total much more than $300 a month... and we have received help from family, friends, and strangers so we do not qualify.) I have done so much more than just these few things like finding doctors, clinics, making calls all over the United States in search of help.

We are in need of help, substantial help. The end goal is to survive Texas until July which means one more rent payment, a refill on all medication, and supplies to move. Derik's wonderful mother, my mother-in-law has welcomed us into her home, all we have to do is make it to Alaska. The drive requires enough money for not only the gas, but emergency funds in case of an accident, hotel along the route in the event a child gets sick or to shower/sleep comfortably, and food along the route. I cannot go back to work while Derik is in need of full-time care and supervision. He cannot adequately care for our children.
