Eastern Kentucky Flood Clean-Up Relief
Donation protected
Appalachians are a resilient people with a rich and vibrant culture, but we need your help now. For years, our land and labor were exploited by huge coal companies that made billions before leaving the region and its people poor and stripped of resources or infrastructure. The massive profits of the coal industry were never re-invested in the people who made those profits possible—and who provided power to the nation for more than a century—and the land was never repaired or reclaimed.
Last week, historic, torrential rains struck the region, and we are witnessing the effects of an environmental disaster on communities that were already suffering and vulnerable from years of exploitation and neglect. Entire families and communities have lost their homes and belongings—everything. Like so many people of Appalachia, my 86-year-old grandma, Christine Ritchie, had to be airlifted out of her home, which was almost completely destroyed by the floods. My grandma is the smartest, strongest woman I know. She has worked every day of her life and never once complained about it. To be sure, no amount of money can heal the trauma she and so many others have experienced, but her survival—their survival—hangs in the balance now.
We're asking for your help. Any financial contributions or donations will be used for cleaning supplies, clothes, bottled water, etc. As the granddaughter, niece, and cousin, to those who are struggling I greatly appreciate your support. The funds will go 100% to Christine Ritchie and other immediate family members who are so greatly suffering and in need.
We will share photos and videos from your kindness!
