The Eatonville High school wrestling team is in dire need of help and support. This past Tuesday they were informed that thier transportation budget was being cut for this wrestling season, and the ability to fund raise beginning 2 weeks into the season is virtually impossible... They set up a competition schedule for the year, based on previous years where this was never an issue. They have been told we can only get transportation for around 14 events, which may sound like a lot, but really is not when you are trying to get matches for 60+ kids spread out between Varsity, JV, and a Girls team.
The schools answer to this circumstance is to try and avoid cutting any events from the schedule, as less competition will only stunt the growth and development of the athletes. And in many cases could mean some wrestlers may not even get the chance to compete.
The three teams each compete at three different team locations at one time. This is just the nature of how wrestling is organized. With this arrangement, each team would only have 3 to 5 trips the entire season supported by the school.
On a positive point, this years wrestling team is the largest it has been in 20 years. There are approximately 64 kids on the high school wrestling team. They have three teams we are attempting to support. This consists of a team of 13 varsity girls and 2 boys, varsity and junior varsity teams consisting of 51 boys. This team represents a smaller high school of around 520 kids.
For reference, less then 4 years ago we saw an average of 15 to 20 wrestlers each year. We have worked hard to help build the team to what it is today. Even when the numbers were small, they have consistently sent multiple wrestlers to the State tournament every year. Last year the boys Varsity team placed 2nd in their district conference championships and the girls team placed 6th in theirs.
The high school wrestlers are always willing to fund raise when they can, year round. One major fund raiser held by us the Jr Cruiser Club, at the Battle of the Woods Annual tournament. All of the wrestlers and many of their family members come together to work this tournament. This contributes to some of their expected costs. They also host a home Dual team tournament every year.
Unfortunately having always had the support of the school for all of the events in the past.
Here is the breakdown of what we estimate they will need without having to cut from their planned schedule:
Transportation cost to and from Girls Varsity, Boys Varsity and Junior varsity tournaments.
They have estimated 8 trips at: $1280.00 per trip. This includes travel cost per mile at $4.26 a mile and the cost of the bus driver at $33.60 an hour. Most trips are between 100-200 miles round trip because of our location. A few require a bit longer travel. Also most tournaments for the bus driver runs around 12-14 hrs for each tournament.
Total estimated non funded transportation costs:
$ 10, 240
The above amount is a large sum of money we know. They will have to cancel events if we cannot raise it quickly which could mean some of their new wrestlers may not be able to compete.
We would greatly appreciate anything that could be donated in this difficult time.
All donations will be made to : Eatonville Jr. Cruisers which is a non-profit organization. They will pay the needed transportation out of the gifted funds.
