Eat, Walk & Talk for Motor Neurone Disease
In September 2020 our mum, Susan was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. An otherwise healthy and happy 80 year old is now wheelchair bound, unable to chew or swallow, and is rapidly losing the ability to speak.
Motor Neurone Disease is an uncommon condition whereby it affects the brain and the nervous system, leading to muscle weakness and often visible wasting. Motor Neurones control important muscle activity, such as: Gripping, Walking, Speaking, Swallowing and Breathing in time making these activities impossible.
There is no cure for Motor Neurone Disease, however some treatments can make a MND patients life more comfortable and give them the best quality of life possible.
Since our mum was diagnosed, her illness has rapidly deteriorated. We have found that mum still enjoys reading, however, has very little ability to do much else, other than sit in her chair listening to dad chatter away all day who has Alzheimer's!
We were put in touch with the MND Association who offered us phenomenal support, not only were they a fantastic emotional support to mum, but also for both of us (mums twin daughters). They have also ensured that every practical support mum might need is there to ensure a more comfortable home life for her.
Along with us, mum's 2 Granddaughter's (our daughters and nieces) will be raising money to give back to the Motor Neurone Disease Association as a way to thank them for the support they have so far provided us. One Granddaughter lives in Vietnam and the other in Ireland, so between those two countries, and us in England we have chosen to 'Spend a day in Mum's (Granny's) shoes' on Sunday 8th November.
- We will be walking 10 miles with weights on our ankles to reflect the difficulty she faces every day moving her legs
- We will spend the day eating only liquidised food, to reflect the challenges she has every day eating
- Finally, we are going to give up our words and stay silent for the day
We would love to raise as much money and awareness as we can for a charity who have been truly remarkable in such difficult times. So please share this page and if possible, any donation would be greatly appreciated from all four of us, and especially from our mum.
Thank you
