Support Women’s Fund in Georgia to Build a Feminist Residency Centre
All support for this fundraiser will go directly to Women’s Fund in Georgia, with Global Fund for Women acting as their fiscal sponsor.
Although we are half of the world’s population, women own less than 20% of the world’s private property. In over 90 countries around the world, women don’t even have the right to own a land.
A few years ago, Women’s Fund in Georgia purchased a piece of land. Our land is less than two acres but, by owning it, we increase the 20% that belong to women, albeit symbolically. Owning land is a political act for us.
Equally, women hold no personal space. Having a personal space implies being independent. Women’s independence is not tolerated by patriarchal systems, as independence means confidence, freedom of action, empowerment. On our land, we are building a feminist space. Having this space is a political act for us.
Social and environmental justice calls us to build a space that gives equal care to humans and nature. Our space is a green space; it is predominantly built with straw-bale and wood. It is a breathing building. It is sustainable and energy efficient. It is environmentally friendly and has a reduced ecological footprint. Having a green eco-space is a political act.
The feminist residency aims to enhance collaboration between different social movements. Thus, our green/eco-friendly straw-bale building (600 sq. m) will provide space free of charge to groups of local women, women’s/human rights/environmental activists and women’s non-profit organisations for their meetings, conferences, workshops, presentations and project planning sessions. Moreover, the residency will offer free accommodation to women artists and writers who require temporary space for their work and contemplation. In exchange, we ask residents to look after the building and adjoining community garden.
In order to guarantee its no-charge policy, the residency will be made self-sustainable by providing additional commercial services to other organisations and events.
