Ed Hew - Medical Expenses

Donation protected

Ed Hew, who was one of the pioneers of the Internet in Canada, has been laid up with medical problems, and can use some help clearing a backlog of bills.

Ed was heavily involved in the evolution of the Internet email in Canada, as well as a key contributor to the birth and growth of the .ca domain.

He managed the UUCP maps for Canada for many years, which was a precursor to what we all use for email today.

Since 1992, he has operated http://www.registry.ca/, a domain registrar, helping Canadians secure their domains and brands.

A number of years ago, Ed relocated to the Philippines, and established a Unix consultancy, while continuing to operate his domain business.

He is married. With his wife Mona, they have 6 children aged from 1 - 13 years.
Together, they lead a quiet rural existence in the interior of Mindanao.

Over the last few years, the consulting income has dropped off, and he has largely been living off the domain business income, which has been quite tight.

Six months ago, a tumor was discovered on his leg, which ended up being cancerous. Since then, he has attended various hospitals, but in the end, it was decided that the best course was to amputate the leg.

A few weeks ago, his leg was amputated at the upper thigh.
Ed is on the mend, although the recovery will be long.

For foreigners in the Philippines, health insurance is difficult to acquire, and expensive to maintain, and as such, Ed doesn't have the coverage needed.

As a result, Ed has borrowed what he can from friends and family to get through the urgent situation.

His recovery will take some time, and will require ongoing appointments and a heavy regime of antibiotics.

We are setting up this go-fund-me to help raise funds to pay back those debts, and provide a buffer to pay for the ongoing recovery checkups and medicine.

Please contribute what you can.
