Eddie Bryant - Liver Transplant

Family and friends, this fundraiser was created to raise funds for the medical costs associated with a liver transplant for Eddie Bryant.

One night in October 2020, Eddie faced the unknown with a fall and bleeding. Rushed to a hospital in Richmond, VA, the doctors discovered he had several large esophageal varices. The doctors spoke of cirrhosis or some other types of auto-immune disorders. These diagnoses came as a shock to all of us, as Eddie was otherwise very active and healthy. His care team in Roanoke diagnosed him with cirrhosis in December 2020, due to the genetic disorder, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. In June 2021, Eddie had a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure to help lower the pressure in his portal vein. Although effective, his condition worsened more quickly than the doctors expected. At this point, Eddie was referred to Duke to discuss his candidacy for a liver transplant. In August 2021, the Duke team said that Eddie might be a transplant candidate, but his MELD scores were too low to put him on the list then. Fast forward to June 2022, his MELD scores have more than doubled, and his condition has worsened quickly. He was officially placed on the liver transplant list in August 2022. The medical team at Duke is very hopeful and continues to commend Eddie on his physical and mental strength. We pray that Eddie continues to maintain this strength, as he will need it to undergo a liver transplant and recovery.

Along with the medical costs associated with the transplant, Nancy and Eddie will have to stay in the Durham area for at least a month after he is released from the hospital. The financial impact of the transplant, medicines, lodging, transportation, meals, etc., will be significant. We have set a goal of $5,000 to raise. Eddie and Nancy appreciate all the calls, texts, love and support.
