Eden's Zambian Summer Internship

This summer I have the amazing opportunity to travel to Zambia and take part in an Environmental Sustainability Internship, with the organization African Impact. This project aims to combat one of our planets biggest issues today: plastic and waste. African Impact works closely with local communities to find new solutions to this crisis like eco-bricking and up-cycling of products (an eco-brick is essentially a plastic bottle that is filled with plastic trash until it is very dense; they can then be used to construct a variety of structures: homes, schools garden spaces). As an intern I will be involved devising and constructing new eco-brick projects. I will also be collecting data to develop statistics on the waste management epidemic. Each week we will meet with community members to educate and discuss waste management as well. Through this experience I will gain essential skills at a grass roots level, that will be valuable as I further my career in this field. I am raising money to help cover my travel expenses and room and board while I am there. I can't begin to explain how excited I am for this trip which is May-June of this summer, 2019. This will be my 4th abroad trip to the continent. From each trip I have gained indispensable experience from the people I encountered. I am particularity excited for this trip because I now get to apply my knowledge of Sustainable Development and the richness of African cultures, that I have learned through my studies. A trip like this provides valuable first hand experience that no classroom could ever teach. I hope this trip will lead me to future careers opportunities and projects within the continent and I am thankful for the supportive family and friends I have that stand beside me on my journey.
